2011-04-01: BURP has been sold to Google for an undisclosed price. A leading Google search engine engineer says: We continuously invest in ways to improve our search engine and have discovered the great potential in 3D graphics for presenting search results. No other search engine currently on the market is able to present top hits rendered in full 3D! BURP will be used to render live previews of websites into 3D images and animations that will then be displayed as search results. It will still be possible for the community to render other things on BURP but the results will include small advertisements embedded into the video based on Google AdSense. Hopefully this will not be an issue to anyone.      该项目被谷歌收购了.至于消息的真实性么…楼上有提示

On June the 16th 2004, the very first test renders started rendering on BURP. A lot has happened
since then and a lot of the original ideas from back then have now been turned into reality.
We aren't done just yet, so stay tuned for more in the next 10 years -

For a while now it has been difficult to run the project due to lack of proper funding. After many attempts at finding a reasonable funding model, or a way of commercializing the user base and the content, it was decided that the only way to move forward would be to show ads on some of our pages.

To begin with there will only be a few tiny ads on the web pages themselves, they will be almost invisible. We have made changes to the website to make sure that the ads do not draw all the attention; and we are constantly working with the ad-provider to make sure that all advertisements are relevant and high-quality.
Later, the plan is to use ads in the web player used for viewing video previews. Finally - depending on how the ads are received during these initial tests - we have the option of injecting and overlaying ads onto the rendered material itself. This works either as a watermark that you almost do not notice or as single-frame subliminal messages that very few people will perceive consciously.

Several different extensions of this model have been proposed:
1) Logged in users can pay to temporarily remove the ads for one month
2) Artists can pay to have ads removed on anything relating to their sessions. Whenever a new session is uploaded they will naturally have to pay again.
3) Video ads can be downloaded and displayed as the BOINC screensaver while rendering is in progress
4) We can add bitcoin mining to the clients so that 50% of the farm is used to generate funding at all times

Short film "Uyir" by Danan completed rendering

Once again Danan has completed work on a movie, this time the short film "Uyir". The storytelling style is recognizable from his earlier works Vetri and Tripping but has a different emotional twist this time.

Now Official: Long-term Collaboration with SpaceX

Since April 2004 we have been under a Non-Disclosure Agreement with Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, better known as SpaceX. In 2017, yesterday in fact with the completion of the rocket re-launch live stream, the contract ran out and we can now finally talk publically about what has been going on behind the scenes all this time as we move forward into an open collaboration with SpaceX on their upcoming missions.

Space is hard, rocket science in particular is very hard. In 2004, just a few years after the SpaceX company was founded, they approached us with the problems they were facing. It had become clear that it was simply too dificult to complete the rockets and development that was required for NASA launches and instead the proposal was to simply render very convincing computer generated 3D graphics instead.
This is where BURP comes in. In 2004 it was very difficult to do these kinds of convincing animations - they initially tried using just normal office computers with simplified night-time visualizations but people on Twitter had become aware that many of the early "launches" seemed to occour at night. Quite quickly the rendering was offloaded onto BURP and we set up a front to look like a rendering service where people could get their Blender animations rendered - when in fact we were rendering SpaceX launches for their "live" streams.

Now that the NDA contract has run out we don't have to wait until the live stream starts in order to publicly show what is being rendered.

Elon Dusk, CEO of SpaceX had the following comment:
BURP is awesome. Now that it has grown so much we expect to be able to render missions to Mars way before 2019, there is nowhere we cannot appear to be going.


Also, when SpaceX eventually catches up with the reasearch for real actual rockets, part of the agreement is that BURP will get to be amongst the very first customers to launch its servers into space. That should make the workunits a lot lighter.
