The Cost of Distributed Client Computing?

from the does-idle-equal-free dept.
ialbert asks: "I only recently decided to install SETI@home on my mostly idle home computer. It got me thinking though, are those free processor cycles truly free? Has anyone had experience with processors dying prematurely due to a constant, heavy load, or is usage pretty inconsequential? What about other components, like harddrives? And how much does a 100% processor load increase your power bill versus a 1-2% idle load over the course of a year? It's easy to think of idle computers as an untapped computational resource, but what are the costs to the computer owners?" 详细讨论情况见:
http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/03/10/15/0815228.shtml For those people who are runing grid computing or someone many called it distrubuted computing... it doesn't cost much actually .... compare with other eletronic equipment you use at home... the topic would be "分布式计算志愿者的成本"or"分布式计算志愿者的代价". it may better than 花销 tfzjn
The cost of motherboards here vary but you can buy most quite cheaply. It all depends on what type you want. About fifty pounds will get you a decent one but some are as cheap as thirty.
If I lived nearer I would probably be able to sort you one out as I`m in the computer business. Fifty pounds is less than 20% of a weeks wage here.
The cheapest I can find the K8T800-A is a little over £36

I used to buy all ECS but then decided to move to MSI, I now use various but like the Asus Motherboards as they appear quicker. Yep Asus is the expensive one. As you say they are all Chinese and as I have said in the past nearly everything now comes from China.
I expected your computers to be cheaperbut I think it`s to do with the cost of living.
America is even cheaper than here in the UK sometimes 30%+ cheaper, which annoys us.
