IBM has recruited Walt Disney World to help educate people about what it means to live on a Smarter Planet.

Leveraging a long-standing relationship, IBM will open a Smarter Planet exhibit at the Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The exhibit will be centered on an implementation of a green data center, a set of kiosks that will allow people to test their knowledge about the planet, and a video game that will allow people to insert their own custom avatar. The storyline of the video game will be based on the history of the computer industry from “the perspective of IBM.”

Obviously, this latest effort is part of a ongoing, and sometimes relentless, Smarter Planet marketing campaign. But the cool IT thing about the exhibit is that IBM customers will be invited to a behind-the-scenes tour of the green IT data center.

That demonstration is anchored around a Scalable Modular Data Center that promises to reduce energy costs by 15 percent to 40 pecent. Unused compute cycles from the Smarter Data Center are volunteered to the World Community Grid, a project that makes available "supercomputers" to researchers by joining thousands of individual computers. The Data Center also includes a demomstration of IBM Cloudburst, which is a turnkey cloud computing platform developed by IBM.

But given the fact that term “family vacation” is often viewed as an oxymoron, maybe a little work away from your family vacation may be just the thing after spending a day with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White and every IT person's favorite Disney character: Goofy.
