Leap Day Challenge - Just for Fun!
The Leap Day Challenge is now "Just for Fun". There are too many obstacles to overcome in such a short time span. I would say that the past 6 days has been a comedy of errors, but there's nothing fun about what has happened, and the tails we've chased attempting to figure things out have been many.
21 February - Nvidia 295.73 Driver
Nvidia released the production 295.73 driver. In short, there's a sleep issue. More information available in this thread.
24 February - Work generation script
In preparation for my departure, and to help ease the daily maintenance at PG, the work generation scripts were automated. In the process, a change in the fpops calculation caused faulty tasks to go out. This was quickly addressed and appeared resolved which led to the next move.
25 February - Task length increased
The CW tasks were less than 5 minutes on fast GPU's. With the upcoming Challenge, this would have overwhelmed the server. Therefore, task lengths were tripled...credit was tripled...and fpops was tripled. Unfortunately, the tripling of fpops was not enough for some of the cards and the reason is still unclear why. However, fpops has now been increased 9x's the original and, although less accurate, appears to have resolved the issue.
26 February - 64 bit GCWsieve app max sieve depth discovered
The 64 bit GCWsieve app was discovered to have reached its max sieve depth of approximately 2^51. 32 bit GCWsieve and GPU CWPsieve have a max of approximately 2^62. Ken was able to provide a 64 bit Linux build of CWPsieve and it has tested well. However, the Windows and MacIntel builds will not be available for the Challenge. The timing for this could not have been worse...well, maybe if it occurred during the Challenge. :(
Combining all 4 of those issues above has created so much havoc the last 6 days that it was prudent that the Challenge be "changed". There are simply too many hosts affected to run a "fair" Challenge.
I'm sure there will be many disappointed on both sides of the fence, so please let me extend my apologies all around.
Certainly not the flat note I wanted to depart on but still, one that was born out of necessity. As it stands now, there are 8 official Challenges that count towards the yearly Challenge series. At a later date, if conditions are right, a 9th Challenge (24 hour one) may be created as a "make up" to this.
The Leap Day Challenge will still be offered, stats will be provided, but only on a "Just for Fun" basis.
