Why does my PC show 100% CPU use?

The CPU in computers is actually 100% utilized no matter what is going on, except when it is powered off, or stopped. There is a secret "idle" task running in the background that runs at lower priority than everything else in the computer, even lower than the grid agent. The idle task counts up the percentage of the time it runs and calls this "idle time" and reduces the reported CPU utilization figure accordingly. Neither the grid agent nor the idle task will run if your computer has other work to do. However, since the grid agent runs at slightly higher priority than the idle task, the idle task won't run at all and thus report that your computer is always 100% utilized. These two tasks account for the otherwise remaining unused cycles of your CPU. The agent runs at lowest CPU priority, so anything else will preempt it. Otherwise, it uses all of the spare CPU, which will make the CPU usage look like 100%. If you set your agent preferences to run as screen saver only, it will not run until the screen saver comes up. There is also a snooze button, which lets you make it pause for n minutes. You can minimize the agent window and right click -> exit on the icon any time in the icon tray to totally stop it until the next reboot. Having it run in the background along with other applications is usually not a problem unless you have a system with relatively little memory. For such systems you might choose to use the "Run only as screen saver" option. Go to the agent preferences window (the one with the check icon) and select "Run only as Screen Saver" and then click on Apply. You can also log onto the web site using your id and set your profile to have the agent only run at certain hours of the day. However, the agent must finish its current work and talk to the server to receive this new schedule setting from the server.

A few machines have not been designed with sufficient cooling, fins sometimes fill with dust, and some fans run slower with age. This could be a problem whether you are running our agent or not. However, some advanced users prefer to change their BIOS or jumper settings to run the machine at a lower clock speed to have a greater safety margin regarding temperature. Others purchase and install higher capacity CPU heat-sinks with more powerful cooling fans. Many newer laptops have a setting for lowering the cpu speed. If your laptop supports this, it should let you run it cooler. Please decide what is best in your situation.

Why does the software give an error message (# 48) upon restarting Windows98?

On some earlier versions of Windows98, this can happen due to bugs in the Operating System. We offer a fix for these builds, but if your Windows98 is an older build, this fix will not work. To fix the problem, first uninstall the software by going to [Start] [Settings] [Control Panel] and double clicking on [Add/Remove Programs]. Highlight the entry for World Community Grid and click on Add/Remove. Restart your computer. Go to the download site for Winsock 2. After installing the update, restart your computer. Go to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, and select the option for Support. This will run a diagnostic program and point to a download of Microsoft's Critical Updates. If there are a large number of updates that you have not installed, you can limit your updates to the Service Packs. Restart your computer. After installing these patches, the software and your other applications should run in a more secure and more reliable manner.

Why do I get a warning about a .sig file when the software connects to the server?

Like the World Community Grid tapi.dll virus warning, this is a false positive. The software updates itself by downloading and running a file from the World Community Grid servers. However some virus programs may interpret this behavior as virus like. There are two ways in which you can handle this situation. The first is to allow the file to download, then stop the software and run a full virus scan on your computer, using the latest virus signature files. You should not find any evidence of a virus. Restart the software and allow it to update itself. The second way is to stop the software and uninstall it. Then manually download and install the latest version available from our website.

Why do I get an error:" Virus Detected", followed by "C:\program files\world community grid\TAPI.DLL could be infected with an unknown virus"?

There is no virus. Virus protection programs recognize new viruses by looking for certain behaviors that they (viruses) typically display. Before excluding the World Community Grid Software and its files, we recommend that you test to see if there really is a virus. Note that it will be only against that specific file, and (if your virus scanner has the ability to name the offending application) it will list the software or one of its files as the suspect program. They will be able to deny its existence and modify their software to be more software friendly. World Community Grid is working with virus detection vendors to prevent these false positives from happening.

First, restart Windows to complete installation. If you continue to get this message, this error is occurring because your operating system requires an update to run the software. To recover your member name, open the World Community Grid software agent and you will see your member name near the top, right under Member Information.

The agent is not counted until it returns its first result. Also, the statistics on the web site are updated multiple times per day.

If you change your password, we require a minimum length of 6 characters. If you set an original password of 5 characters at registration, then you should still be able to use it to log in. You may have tried logging in during a server maintenance window. Please try again.

Why did I receive an email with my password when I did not request it?

The system is working exactly as intended. When you forget your password, you can have World Community Grid send the password to the email address associated with your member name. If a member mistypes their member name while requesting their password, the email will be sent to the wrong person. Hopefully these members will realize and correct their mistake. In the mean time, your password is still valid, and you can ignore the unrequested email.

The agent install keeps giving me an error and asks me to check my Proxy settings.

You need to be connected to the Internet at the start to have the agent connect to the server to get work. Check to see if you can get to some web page with your browser. If your Internet connection is working, it might be that you have a software firewall which is blocking access to the server.worldcommunitygrid.org site. If you have one, try turning it off temporarily and see what happens. If it starts working, then add the server.worldcommunitygrid.org address as a trusted site to your firewall.

Why does my software hang when it tries to communicate with the server?

This problem is caused when your software tries to connect to our server to send the results, to download a new work unit, or even to log in for the first time. Your attempt may be delayed if there is an unusually large load of users attempting to connect to the server. Your software will automatically retry until it makes its connection, adding time between each retry attempt exponentially until it reaches an hour in length, then holds steady so that the software only attempts to connect once an hour. During this time, its activity is usually reported by Windows as being unresponsive. However, if left alone, the software will eventually connect to the server and begin to process valuable work.

I get "Cannot Connect to Server" messages when logging in. What's wrong?

There are several scenarios which may cause this error:
This error could be due to a physical disconnection between your machine and the Internet, whether at your machine or your ISP.
Alternatively, our server could be temporarily down for maintenance. We try to restrict our maintenance to non-peak hours in the US, which may be inconvenient for folks on other continents. From time-to-time, it is necessary to take the servers offline outside our scheduled maintenance periods. We apologize if this causes any inconvenience. We will endeavor to keep the service available at all times.
This may occur on some machines that do not recognize the network when they are first launched. Exiting and restarting the World Community Grid Software clears this up, and users are able to connect without error.
If you are using a proxy server, a personal or corporate firewall, or an Internet gateway router, be sure to configure your settings before logging in.
有好几种情况都会引起这种错误：

Agent communicates with server frequently

If your agent communicates with the server, runs the project program for less than a few minutes rather than many hours and then communicates with the server again, this kind of behavior is almost certainly due to a paging/swap file that is too small or not having virtual memory enabled. Currently the software does not have the ability to check your virtual memory settings as part of its system prerequisite check. You need to increase the maximum paging/swap file size so that the software can allocate about 200 MB of additional virtual memory, provided you have the disk space available. Look at Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance Options. In Windows 98 go to Control Panel->System->Performance->Virtual Memory. The maximum paging file size should be at least 2 or 3 times your real memory size, and should preferably be at least 512MB, whichever is greater. Even though the Rosetta program allocates about 200 MB it typically touches only around 30 MB ("working set size") most of the time, so your system should not page a lot unless you are running other memory hungry applications along with it. That is why we require machines to have 128MB at a minimum and virtual memory enabled. The amount of memory used by the agent can be a factor in machines with less than 512 MB of memory. You might notice some delays due to paging when the agent is preempted by any other work. The agent runs at lowest CPU priority so that it immediately yields to other work to be done on your PC. However, paging does create some delays. If a low amount memory is a significant problem for your system, consider running the agent only as a screen saver. On the agent, go to the preferences window (the one with the check icon) and select "Run only as Screen Saver" and then click on "Apply". Over the next weeks, we will be trying to see if there are ways to further reduce the 200 MB allocation and possibly also the working set size.

My World Community Grid Software won't autodial with Windows 2000/XP.

Autodial does not work properly with any application outside of IE unless a service called "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager" running. By default this service is set to ""manual start"" and unless you change it to ""automatic start"" at boot or start it manually, autodial for other applications will not work. To check or change the setting for this service, select "Start", select "Settings", and then click ""Control Panel."" Double click "Administrative Tools" and then click "Computer Management." In the computer management console expand the "services and applications" section, click on "Services." In the services detail pane scroll down in the list till you get to "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager," double click on it. Change the startup type to "Automatic" if you want the service to start when you start your computer. Save your changes and exit. Now World Community Grid should auto dial when it needs a connection. You can find info about these steps if you press F1 with the desktop active. Then type "autodial, configuring" and select the topic.

This area is called the Windows system tray (or systray). When the software updates itself, it will create a new icon here. The previous icon may not clear until you move your mouse over it. This is common among Windows applications that use the systray.

This occurrence is not unique to the software, though it is visible because of the way that the software works. When the Operating System completely freezes and power to the computer must be cut (a forceful/hard boot is performed) open files are mishandled and often corrupted. This occurs in virtually all operating systems, and can lead to corruption of open program files, or even of the operating system itself. The software performs a check of its files when it is started and if they have been damaged, for example during a hard reboot, then it will discard them and download a new work unit.

Why does the software sometimes display with a piece of the screen missing?

The software requires an 800x600 screen to display properly. If the software's window is opened when the screen is resized (for instance if you begin playing a game that resizes the screen), windows may not properly "re-paint" the windows when the screen is re-sized back to its original setting. To fix this, minimize the software's window by clicking on the downward pointing triangle. Right click on the software's icon in the system tray (the section of the Start bar where the time is displayed) and choose exit. Open the software by clicking on [Start] [Programs] [World Community Grid] [World Community Grid Software].
