Being part of World Community Grid
is simple -- and the software and your membership are free,
secure, and will not affect how you use your computer! To
start, you must download the software. There are currently
two versions of the software available. One is for the
Windows operating system, the other for Linux.
||Please note: FightAIDS@Home
is available for PCs and laptops with the Windows
operating system. FightAIDS@Home for Linux will be
available soon. Please be aware that World Community
Grid is running two projects: Human Proteome Folding
and FightAIDS@Home. As such, you may see the grid
agent processing a work unit for either of these two
projects at any given time.
Similar to other software
downloads, World Community Grid software requires that you
accept an end user license agreement. You should read the Software
License Agreement prior to downloading the software.
Participants of World Community
Grid contribute computer time that normally would go to
waste. This is the ultimate win-win situation. Your computer
accesses World Community Grid's computing power to advance
projects that benefit humanity. We provide the software that
does it all for free, and you become part of a community
that is helping to change the world.
Once you install the agent, you
will be participating in World Community Grid. No other
action must be taken; it's that simple!
The software runs only when your
computer is on. It will automatically start when you start
your computer and will run when your computer is idle. The
more your computer is on, the more processing happens. The
software doesn't need to be connected to the Internet to
work its task, but once finished, it needs to reconnect to
the Internet to return data it has finished working on and
to get a new task. The software operates as any other
Internet application, requesting an Internet connection from
While your grid agent is crunching
numbers, you are earning points! On the Global
Statistics page, you can track your participation, and
watch your points accumulate either as an individual or as
part of a team. Statistics are updated four times each day
at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC.
Once you have read the agreement,
click on the download button above for the version of the
software you want. If your Web browser gives you the option
to "Open" the file after downloading, do so.
Otherwise, once the download is complete, save the file to a
convenient place and double click on the file. Then, follow
the install instructions.
