Ibercivis comes up from the collaboration of different groups of researchers from various scientific and technological fields with the goal of creating a new national scientific platform based on citizen computation. Its' international references are the [[SETI@home]] project and Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, [[BOINC]]. At a national level we have the [[Zivis]] project.

SETI is the acronym of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. There are several SETI projects which try to find extraterrestrial intelligent life, either by analysing the electromagnetic signals captured in different radio telescopes or by sending messages to the space with the aim of finding someone who reports them. One of the most popular projects is SETI@home, created in 1999, and which is supported by thousands and thousands of people around the world, using their own personal computers in order to process the information captured in the Arecibo's radio telescope (Puerto Rico)

BOINC is a software platform developed in the philosophy of open code available with the GNU LGPL licence. Actually, is considered as a citizen supercomputer, which has almost 485.000 active computers throughout the world and more than 50 researching projects (amongst them all the Ibercivis projects) developed thanks to it.

Zivis project was developed in Zaragoza during April and May 2007. Zivis goal was to have a calculation power which would give competitive results on fusion plasmas simulation at an international level. This project, based on BOINC had a huge success on participation, achieving more than 800.000 hours of calculations made by 5200 computers (7200 processors) from more than 3000 internet users.

Zivis achieved success not only in a scientific field but also in a sociological field. In the scientific field, the "virtual infrastructure" made up of the citizens computers turned out to be a powerful tool for calculations. From a sociological point of view, it turned out that people who lent their computers took a great interest on the investigations which were done on them on the idle moments. Citizens participated in the internet forums. For some people was the first time they comprehend a bit of the fusion physics.

Ibercivis is citizen computation platform that allows society to participate on scientific research in a direct way and in real time.

It's about a leading initiative in Spain that intends to involve in volunteer computation the maximum number of citizens. It uses the calculation capacity of the computer in idle moments to carry out tasks derived from an investigation project.

Ibercivis brings the citizens closer to leading investigations and makes them participant in the scientific knowledge generation. At the same time, it provides the scientific community with a powerful calculation tool. The computer turns into an open window to science, creating a channel for the direct dialog between researchers and society.

Its' international references are the SETI@home project and Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, BOINC. At a national level we have the Zivis project.

SETI@home

SETI is the acronym of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. There are several SETI projects which try to find extraterrestrial intelligent life, either by analysing the electromagnetic signals captured in different radio telescopes or by sending messages to the space with the aim of finding someone who reports them. One of the most popular projects is SETI@home, created in 1999, and which is supported by thousands and thousands of people around the world, using their own personal computers in order to process the information captured in the Arecibo's radio telescope (Puerto Rico)

BOINC

BOINC was originally created in order to solve security problems of SETI@home, but it was so favourably received that several projects of scientific distributed computation (physics, nuclear medicine, climatology) were launched in the same platform.

Zivis Proyect

Zivis project was developed in Zaragoza during April and May 2007. Zivis goal was to have a calculation power which would give competitive results on fusion plasmas simulation at an international level. This project, based on BOINC had a huge success on participation, achieving more than 800.000 hours of calculations made by 5200 computers (7200 processors) from more than 3000 internet users.

Organizers

Ibercivis is a platform promoted by different research centres from all over Spain belonging to various knowledge areas and with a high scientific excellence.

  • Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT). Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.
  • Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.
  • RedIRIS. Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio.
  • Instituto de Biocomputación y Física de Sistemas Complejos (BIFI) de la Universidad de Zaragoza.

Furthermore, ibercivis counts on the collaboration of local corporations as the Zaragoza or Madrid city councils and on several public and private institutions interested in the promotion of the scientific culture and citizen participation in the development of the Spanish research.
