The Ryle Telescope (RT)

The Ryle Telescope (RT) is an 8-element interferometer operating at 15 GHz (2cm wavelength). The elements are equatorially mounted 13 m Cassegrain antennas, on an (almost) E-W baseline. Four aerials are mounted on a 1.2 km rail track, and the others are fixed at 1.2 km intervals.

The NANTEN Submillimeter Observatory

The NANTEN2 Observatory (NANTEN is japanese for southern sky) is a collaboration between research institutes in Japan (Nagoya and Osaka University), South Korea (Seoul National University), Germany (KOSMA, Universität zu Köln, Radio Astronomisches Institut Universität Bonn), and Chile (Universidad de Chile).

The observatory is located at 4800 m altitude on Pampa la Bola in the Atacama desert, Chile. Operation will start in early 2006.

Equipped with a 4 m submillimeter telescope, NANTEN2 will be used to survey the southern sky in molecular and atomic spectral lines between 110 and 880 GHz (2.6 mm to 350 micron wave length).

The highest observing frequencies are covered by the KOSMA SMART receiver, a dual-frequency, 2x8 pixel array receiver operating between 460 and 880 GHz, and KOSMA array Acousto Optical Spectrometers (AOS) as backends.

Jodrell Bank Observatory

Jodrell Bank Observatory is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Manchester. The Observatory is home to the Lovell Radio Telescope and the MERLIN/VLBI National Facility which is operated by the University on behalf of PPARC. It is a place of learning, teaching and research for the many astronomers, students and engineers who develop and use the facilities here.

Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT)

The large radio telescope near Ootacamund (Ooty) was set up by TIFR radio astronomers, in the picturesque Nilgiri Hills of South India in 1970. Designed and built in India, the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) is an off-axis parabolic cylinder 530 m long and 30 m wide operating at a nominal frequency of 326.5 MHz with a maximum bandwidth of 15 MHz at the front-end. The reflecting surface of the telescope is made of 1100 thin stainless-steel wires running parallel to each other for the entire length of the cylinder and supported on 24 steerable parabolic frames. An array of 1056 half-wave dipoles in front of a 90 degrees corner reflector forms the primary feed of the telescope.

The Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO)

The Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO) is a division of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) under the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS). NRO operates powerful, advanced radio telescopes such as the 45 m radio telescope, the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA), and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph. A large number of scientists from around the world visit NRO to use these telescopes for researches in astronomy and astrophysics. Maintenance, upgrades, and new technical innovations are ceaselessly made all year round.
