Spikes are radio waves occurring at single frequencies that are strong enough to be distinguished from general noise. To extract these events from raw radiowave data, we need to perform baseline smoothing, data de-chirping, and Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs). In addition to single spikes, SETI@home also searches for groups of spikes occurring in particular patterns—namely, Gaussians, pulses, and triplets. |
