AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- Finding a cure for cancer could be as close as your own computer.

The World Community Grid uses idle computers to help treat, cure and diagnose diseases.

Students in a lab at Austin Community College are putting the school's computers to work, but when the typing stops, the machines become "superhero computers," so to speak, quietly calculating possible cures for cancer and drug treatments for malaria and AIDS.

"If you were to ask, most of our students and faculty members, they don't even know it's on there," said Herb Coleman, instructional computing director of Austin Community College.

"You know, the world has hundreds of millions of PCs sitting around," said Victors Berstis, chief scientist of the World Community Grid. "A lot of them are just wasting electricity, so it's a good environmental thing."

The high-tech idea started in Austin four years ago and has a network of 1 million machines from all around the world.

Through the high-speed project, researchers have learned how to detect breast cancer earlier and with twice as much accuracy.

"We always ask them, given the resources and supercomputers they have, how long would it have taken them to do this job, and they say sometimes 120 years, or they wouldn't even have considered doing it," Berstis said.

So while participants in the program do absolutely nothing, their computers are hard at work, saving lives one calculation at a time.

"It will be really great to know that if they do some breakthrough that it was some of our computers to help crunch the numbers to get them there," Coleman said.
