Be a part of our Community Video

We want to show more folks around the world why our existing members are "on the Grid", so we've started putting together a little video... check it out here.

It’s not complete without you in it though (plus we could use a little creative help), so upload your contribution (in the form of a 30-second clip) here by November 17th. Use a camcorder, webcam or phone camera... whatever works best.

A Workshop on World Community Grid for Not-for-profit Research Community in Geneva, Switzerland

On November 11, 2008, IBM Switzerland will be sponsoring a half-day workshop in Geneva, Switzerland, to inform the not-for-profit research community on how information technology can help to speed up research in areas such as healthcare, climate change and natural disasters specifically to encourage proposals for non-for-profit research projects to make free use of IBM's World Community Grid.

During this seminar, Dr Joseph Jasinski, Program Director of the IBM Healthcare and Life Sciences Institute, will talk about the benefits of using the World Community Grid for humanitarian purposes. Prof. Antoine Geissbühler, Director of the Service of Medical Informatics Hospital of Geneva, will address the topic « Strengthening health and healthcare systems with information technologies ».

This workshop is aimed at researchers from UN Agencies, Public Hospitals, Universities and other international non-profit organizations.

New World Community Grid video about Nutritious Rice for the World

Our next video is out! This time, we have Dr. Ram Samudrala, Associate Professor of Computational Biology and Principal Investigator at the University of Washington, to share with us about World Community Grid's "Nutritious Rice for the World" project.

Some projects temporarily slowed down
One of our disk arrays has a problem and we will probably have to replace some hardware and run a disk check program that runs for a long time. During this, we will slow down the Fight AIDS and the Help Conquer Cancer projects so that we don't run out of queued up work while we deal with the disk problem. Thank you for your patience.

Launch of The Clean Energy Project

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the The Clean Energy Project by Harvard University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Clean Energy Project, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The mission of The Clean Energy project is to discover organic materials to create a more efficient and lower cost solar cell. This in turn has the potential of improving the quality of the air in all regions of the world.

Project Badge
If a member contributes a minimum of 14 days of CPU Run Time to this project, they will receive a Clean Energy Project badge on their member statistics page and next to their member name when they post in the forums. There is a different badge for each research project and beta testing. To read more about badges, click here.

In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the The Clean Energy project. To participate in this forum, please press the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. Only forum authors with the title "Clean Energy Project Scientist" are authorized to comment as representatives of the research organization: Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachsetts, USA).

Project Participation
The Clean Energy is the eleventh research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of six projects currently active. The other five active research projects are: Help Conquer Cancer (launched November, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006), FightAIDS@Home (launched November, 2005), and Nutritious Rice for the World (Launched May, 2008). For more detailed information and FAQs about each of these projects, please click on the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here. We thank all of our members for their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.

Because there are six research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. If you prefer, you may elect to focus your computer's time on only particular projects. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select My Projects or click here. To read more specifics on the system requirements for The Clean Energy Project and the other projects, click here.

If you are already a member of World Community Grid, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the The Clean Energy Project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display.

Nutritious Rice for the World project is being slowed down temporarily  

We are slowing down the rice project because the researchers are struggling to get enough disk space to hold all of the results. We have done this so our World Community Grid disks do not fill up too fast as well until the results can be sent to the researchers. If we get too tight on disk space, we may need to pause the rice project for some period of time. On the positive side, members have done an awesome job in contributing to this project. We thank you for that!

Invalid/Error results for The Clean Energy Project

Greetings,

We are encountering a larger number of errors/invalid results with The Clean Energy Project than anticipated. We are sending some of the initial results to the researcher for them to look at and get a resolution to this problem.

Also, with this project we are seeing some really long work units pass through member machines. This usually creates larger result files.

Announcing New Servers and New Hosting Facility

As World Community Grid continues to grow, we require more and more space to store the results from, and data for, our members. Our current infrastructure has been running World Community Grid since November 2004. This infrastructure has worked very well for us. However, the growth of World Community Grid has reach the point where it is time to move to more powerful servers and have access to more bandwidth. This is a direct result of the awesome contribution that all of you have made and continue to make. We look forward to continuing to grow in the new environment.

To prepare for our expansion in 2009 and beyond, World Community Grid is getting brand new equipment and relocating the hosting environment to a new IBM location in Toronto, Canada. Moving to a new location will allow World Community Grid to have access to a new and secure hosting center that is being set up at this time. When fully migrated, we will be able to process the results returned by members and the statistics accumulated by members much more quickly and efficiently.

This hosting center move notification is important because it will provide a better experience for our members and because it may mean that some members may need to modify their firewall settings to allow the World Community Grid software to communicate with the hosting center. If your firewall does prompt you, please re-approve your computers access to World Community Grid. This hosting center move will not affect the URL or web address you use to reach the World Community Grid web site and any existing bookmarks will continue to work.

We are planning to be running in the new environment by the end of the first full week of January. In order to get there from here, we have a tremendous amount of work to do. Most of it will be behind the scenes and not visible to the members. However, some of the changes will be visible to the members. These changes include the following:

We will start making changes soon to work unit deadlines so that we can reduce the amount of data to be transferred between hosting centers. The new deadlines will be only one week, so please keep an eye on your work units to make sure you can complete them on time.

When we are ready to transfer the databases, we will have to stop the website, forums and grid. We expect this step to occur around Jan 8th. During this time members will only see a page that explains what World Community Grid is and contains information about the progress of the change over and invites new members to return in a few days. Also during this time, the BOINC clients will not be able to communicate with the servers.

Finally, our IP address will change. This will cause some people's computers firewalls to request permission to communicate with our servers. Our new IP addresses will be 198.20.8.241 and 198.20.8.246.

We anticipate that the move will be fully completed during the week of January 12, 2009.

We will update you as we proceed through this change, and we sincerely appreciate your wonderful support!

Issues with The Clean Energy Project

We started getting many reports of problems with workunits from The Clean Energy Project on Sunday. As a result we have temporarily stopped sending workunits for the project until we figure out what is wrong.

Some of the ways that these problems would appear on your computer are as follows:

1) On the messages for your computer, you will see the messages:
Task E000115_472A-000j5h00k_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
If this happens repeatedly, you may need to reset the project
Restarting task E000115_472A-000j5h00k_0 using cep1 version 619

These messages will repeat about every 30 minutes. Each time it restarts it will start from 0% complete.

2) You will have a task shown as running but no time is accumulating for the workunit

We have identified at least one issue with a set of the workunits. We have canceled those workunits. The next time a computer running one of the workunits connects to our servers, the workunit will be aborted.

There appears to be at least one additional case. We are continuing to investigate.

We are changing the length each work units runs on your machine. The work units in the past have been estimated to run about 10 hours per work unit. This is an average over all the member machines. We are now targeting 6 hours per work unit with the new batches.

The new batches that are targeting 6 hours each start with batch 4950.

We are still doing our internal testing of the new version of the clean energy project code and are fixing all of the problematic workunits. If our testing goes well we will start a beta test, which could come as early as tomorrow. We will update the forums with the results. Clean Energy Project now available for Linux and Mac!

World Community Grid is excited to announce that members with Linux and Mac computers should now be able to receive work from The Clean Energy Project. In addition, the Windows version has been updated to reduce the error rate of work units. The application version for all 3 operating systems is 6.28.

Dell Social Innovation Competition and World Community Grid

Dear Members,

Dr. Stan Watowich, Principal Investigator, of the Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together project has placed the following announcement in our forums:

Dell Computer and the University of Texas have sponsored a competition asking college kids to suggest ideas to "change the world". One submitted idea was for Dell (and other companies) to pre-install the World Community Grid agent on the computers they sell (much like having pre-installed screen savers or AOL). The goal would be to dramatically increase membership in World Community Grid, since the end-user would simply have to accept or decline running World Community Grid (and avoid the 5 minutes of effort currently required to install World Community Grid software).
