All,

After four and a half years, I am leaving The Rothberg Institute. When I started, it was to replace Ken at the tail end of the migration to version 2 of the project. Sengent was our primary code provider while we also had two on staff programmers / chemists with Wolfgang as a project leader. Times sure change.

I’m sure everyone here has read between the lines my frustrations at being the voice of a project without any developers or access to scientists. You deserve better. I was very excited when Adam came on board as a part time programmer; the project now had a person dedicated to fielding the questions of the community and developing new code / patching holes. At that point, I was essentially the person who pressed a power button when Adam asked me to or physically swapped out RAM & Drives as failures occurred – we just never bothered to change the listed project or forum administrators.

So it comes to pass that as of Jan 1, I will be transitioning to a spin off company and supporting TRI obliquely until (or if) I am replaced. I bid everyone glad tidings and a fond farewell. Happy crunching!

December Project Status

A brief update on project happenings for this month.

November 2007
==============
In November, we tied up the loos ends for system testing the new multiprocessor version of the client. We also got the beta test "sandbox"
server functioning as we needed to conduct beta testing. The beta version was released on December 1.


Upcoming
========
We'll spend the rest of 2007 beta testing the 2007.3 version of the client and fixing any issues that arise. The new client should
be in "production" status early in the new year.

January Project Status

Happy New Year, everyone! A brief update on project happenings for this month.

December 2007
==============
The new multiprocessor beta version of the D2OL client was released on December 1, along with a test "sandbox"
server. No major issues have been reported for the Windows client to this point. There are a couple of kinks to work out with the command-line Linux,
and we'll continue to look into those.


Upcoming
========
The changes made to the client last year will soon be released as the default "production" version, at least for Windows, in the near future.
Work will continue on resolving any outstanding issues in other versions.

March Project Status

February 2008
==============
The Windows installers were finalized for the new multi-processor version of the client, and I had planned to release it to the general population. However, a last minute emergency feature request came along that dictated a change be made to the client. Development here is just about finished and testing will begin shortly. More details on the enhancement as we get closer to releasing the client.

Upcoming
========
In the next month, we'll be testing the latest client update. As this change is fairly non-invasive, testing probably will not be quite as intensive as during other phases. If all goes well, the Windows client will be released within the next month.

March 2008

In March, a last minute emergency feature request came along that dictated a change be made to the new Windows release of the client. This change involves monitoring D2OL processes to make sure that they don't use too many resources. Development and testing have been completed, and release of the client will happen soon.

Upcoming
========
In the next couple of weeks, the new version of the Windows client will be released as the default version. At that point, we'll begin charting activities for the rest of the year.

D2OL Version 3.0 Available for Windows

Version 3.0 of the D2OL client software is now available for Windows operating systems.
The updates to the software for Version 3.0 include:

* Client-side task expiration
* Automatic monitoring and throttling of D2OL processes to maintain your computer's responsiveness
* Multiprocessor support

In April, we released Version 3.0 of the D2OL client for Windows, which inlcudes multiprocessor support, client-side task expiration, and a built-in program to make the client "play nice" with other programs running on your computer. Thanks to all of our beta testers who helped us work through the kinks in this release.

August Project Status

June-July 2008
===============
This summer, we have been monitoring the installations of our updated, multi-processor Windows client. We have worked out a few kinks and helped users get up and running with the new verion.


Upcoming
========
In the coming months, we'll continue working on Linux/Unix installers for the new version of the client, as well as adding better support for the command line version of the multiprocessor feature.

We are also currently considering some internal configuration changes which would improve our network usage profiles. This might entail some changes to our communications channels (i.e., staff e-mail addresses), but should not impact the day-to-day operations of the project. I will keep you posted on progress in this area.

Project Downtime

Beginning next Monday, November 24, we expect that project resources, including web pages and servers, will be unavailable for up to a few days. During this time, The Rothberg Institute will be upgrading its network and rebuilding its firewall. We apologize for the inconvenience but are confident that this will improve the project in the long run.

While the network is down, you can continue to run any tasks that you have downloaded, and then upload the results once we're back online.

December Project Status
Fall 2008
===============
During the Fall season, we spent some time analyzing the network traffic into and out of The Rothberg Institute and decided that some changes were needed to increase project bandwidth and decrease the spam activity that our servers were seeing. During the last week of November, Charles put his plan into action and was able to improve the network health while disrupting the projects very minimally. The crunching environment should be stable now.

Upcoming
========
As the end of the year rapidly approaches, we're considering which activities to undertake in 2009. One that sure to get more attention as we move forward is the effort to make version 3 of the client available for Linux/Unix users. Beyond that, we're always evaluating potential libraries and targets, and, of course, we'd like to hear your ideas.

Server Reconfiguration

The End of an Era
Dear D2OL Community,

On April 15, 2009, the D2OL distributed computing project will officially end operations.

As this chapter in the history of The Rothberg Institute comes to a close, we wanted to
take the opportunity to extend a sincere note of thanks to you, our indcredibly dedicated
members who have driven every aspect of this project. We also want to take a few
moments to reflect on what we have accomplished and to touch on how the project's results,
thanks to your committed efforts, will be leveraged by The Rothberg Institute in the future.

As most of you know, this project set out to develop a viable platform for enabling users from
around the globe to use their personal computers (whether PCs, Linux or Unix boxes, etc.) to
compute the interactions of small molecule drug candidates with target molecules that
likely play prominent roles in specific human disease pathways, including those involved in SARS,
Avian Flu, and Smallpox. In the more than seven years that the project has been active, our members
have returned results for over 150 million drug candidate-disease target tasks, utilizing over
3000 years' worth of CPU time in the process!

With the computational results available to us, we turn our attention toward harvesting the best
possible candidates from this data
set and focusing our efforts in the laboratory in order to accomplish our original goal: finding
effective real-world treatments for orphan diseases.

As we move forward, we will maintain our list of active and past members who have committed
so much time and energy to this project, and we plan to update you periodically on the progress
that we're making in the lab. Your efforts have been invaluable in moving us into position
to take this next important step, and we truly appreciate the contributions that you have made.

We hope that you have enjoyed participating in this project as much as we have. For all that
you have done, thank you!
