The LIGO and GEO 600 detectors

LIGO and GEO 600 are tools designed to measure changes in spacetime called gravitational waves . Gravitational waves are difficult to detect because they are very weak by the time they get to the earth.
LIGO and GEO detect gravitational waves by measuring changes in the pattern formed when two laser beams meet. These patterns depend on the length traveled by each laser beam, which changes when a gravitational wave passes through.
The sensitivity of this type of detector, called a laser interferometer, is proportional to the distance the laser beams travel. Since they look for tiny signals, LIGO and GEO need to be very large.

Data Analysis

How will data be analyzed on my computer?

The two LIGO detectors and GEO 600 each have their own large collection of data. In order to sort through all of this data and find gravitational wave signals, the data has to be broken into small sets that can be processed by individual computers.

Each computer gets data corresponding to a specific area of sky and a specific time interval. Each computer also gets a model of what scientists think a pulsar signal from that part of the sky should look like in the data. Pulsar signals are expected to be sine waves, like the one shown below.

A sine wave is the graph of the equation y = sin x. A sine wave has the same amplitude (distance from centerline to the top of a peak) and wavelength (distance from peak to peak) over time.

A wave that repeats, like the one above, is called a periodic wave. In addition to amplitude and wavelength, a periodic wave is characterized by its frequency. The frequency of a wave is the number of wavelengths that pass a given point in one second. Gravitational waves signals look like sine waves and occur at different frequencies that depend on their source.

正弦波是方程y=sin(x)的曲线图。一个正弦波有固定的振幅(波峰顶部的高度)和波长(波峰的间距)。

如上图所示的周期性的波,称之为周期波。除了振幅和波长,周期波有其固有的频率。波的频率是在一秒钟内波的前进方向上完整波长的个数。引力波信号看起来象正弦波,但随信号源不同具有不同的频率。

一个正弦波有固定的振幅(波峰顶部的高度)
我觉得确切的应该是:从中心线到波峰顶部的高度
只是
波峰顶部的高度不太确切

Detecting Gravitational Waves
Indirect Evidence of Gravitational Waves

The first evidence for gravitational waves came from two stars spiraling toward each other, found in 1974 by astronomers working at the Arecibo Observatory. Researchers watched the stars for many years and noticed that the time it took for the stars to orbit each other was decreasing over time.
Scientists Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse suspected that the change in orbital periods was because the stars were losing energy as gravitational waves. They showed mathematically that if this were true, the orbital periods of the two stars should change by exactly the amount astronomers observed. In 1993, Taylor and Hulse won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.

Albert Einstein is probably the world’s most famous scientist. Although his fame is well deserved, Einstein’s work was largely based on the work of other great scientists. One of these scientists was Sir Isaac Newton, a man often called the founder of modern physical science.

An often told story recounts Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree one day, thinking about the universe. Suddenly an apple fell from the tree and hit him on the head. The startled Newton realized what had happened and, in that split second, he understood how the force of gravity pulled objects to the earth.

This story probably isn’t true, but it does have some truth in it. Newton’s observations about nature led him to the law of gravity. He realized that the force that pulls apples to the ground could also be what keeps the moon orbiting around the earth. Newton realized there must be an attractive force between all masses and he called this force gravity.

From his observations, Newton noticed that all objects are attracted to one another. The strength of the attraction is larger for large masses, but decreases as the objects move farther apart. He called this the law of gravity.

In his theory of gravity, Newton combined the work of the great scientists Copernicus ( 1473-1543) , Kepler (1571-1630), and Galileo (1564-1642). Newton’s theory solved many puzzles of his time, including the cause of tides, the motion of the earth and moon, and the orbit of comets.

The Einstein@Home screen saver has many elements related to the gravitational wave search: the locations of LIGO and GEO 600, the locations of known objects that probably emit gravitational waves, and the area of the sky your computer is studying. The basis of the screen saver is a rotating celestial sphere. A celestial sphere is a projection of what the sky would look like if the stars were attached to a sphere surrounding the earth. The major stars in each constellation are shown on the sphere, but remember that they will look different than you might be used to because you are seeing them from outside the celestial sphere instead of from the earth.

If your system clock is set to the correct time, the detectors will be shown in proper relation to the stars. They move around the celestial sphere once in 24 hours.

Pulsars and Supernovae Remnants

Pulsars and Supernovae are shown on the sky because scientists believe they emit gravitational waves. The purple dots on the celestial sphere mark the locations of pulsars* that have already been detected. These are clustered in the plane of our galaxy, the Milky Way, and are mostly near the center of the galaxy. They are likely sources of gravitational waves.

Area being processed

第 30 楼的翻译还需要做修改,暂时不转到网页中去,其中“傅立叶变化”都需要修改为“傅立叶变换”,另外,有部分语句读起来不通,我先把该转的页面先转掉,等会儿再修改 30 楼的翻译.....
